This past week we experienced the thrill of traveling to and hiking in the mountains of Southern China. Our destination was Guilin, China. We departed Shenzhen on an overnight train. The train had only sleeper cars, there were no upright seats. The guidebooks stated that “practically no one” reserved the “soft sleeper” bunks since they are too luxurious but China is changing fast, and all the compartments were sold out.
We were very proud to be able to navigate through China without speaking the language. Somehow we managed to catch buses, hitch hike, etc. without a problem. The trip was fantastic, the scenery was great and as always, everything in China is very inexpensive.
The highlights of our trip were the terraced fields of Long Jie, the ethnic people of the Yao tribe and the rivers and mountains surrounding Yang Shuo. Great trip and a great way to kick off our new career!
Good Bye China.
